Why Is My Electric Stove Burner Not Heating?

If one electric burner will not heat, first identify the cooktop type and make sure the correct element is selected. Induction also depends on compatible cookware, while removable coil elements can lose connection. If several elements fail, a breaker trips, or you smell burning, stop using the appliance and arrange service.

You set a pan on the cooktop, turn the control, and nothing happens. A failed heating element is one possibility, but it is not the only one. The useful first step is to identify what kind of electric cooking surface you have, because a plug-in coil, a radiant glass-top element, and an induction zone fail in different ways.

Then make one comparison: is only one burner affected, or are several burners not heating? One dead zone points toward that element, its control, or its connection. Multiple dead zones make the appliance power supply and common controls more important suspects.

Start with the control, not the screwdriver

Turn every control off and select one burner again. On knob-controlled ranges, confirm the knob is actually operating the intended element. If knobs were removed for cleaning, make sure they went back in the correct positions.

On touch-control cooktops, check for a control lock and confirm that the display accepted a power level. If there is an error code, write it down before cycling power. A code can be far more useful than repeatedly resetting the appliance.

On induction, the pan is part of the system

An induction cooktop does not simply heat a coil under the glass. It needs cookware with enough magnetic material for the cooktop to detect and energize it. A pan that is nonmagnetic, too small, badly centered, or warped can make a healthy induction zone appear dead.

A simple check is to place a magnet against the bottom of the pan. A strong attraction usually indicates induction-compatible cookware. Size still matters, though. GE Appliances notes that an induction zone may not operate when the pan is below the zone’s minimum size, off-center, or not sitting flat against the glass.

A radiant burner that cycles off may be normal

With a radiant glass cooktop, an element does not have to glow continuously to be working. The control cycles the element on and off to regulate temperature and protect the glass. Whirlpool notes that cycling can occur even on high settings.

Judge performance by what happens in the pan, not by whether the element stays red every second. A warped pan or one that is much smaller than the cooking zone can also transfer heat poorly and make the burner seem weak.

Plug-in coil elements can lose their connection

Some electric ranges use exposed metal coils that plug into a receptacle beneath the cooktop. A coil can be disturbed during cleaning and no longer sit correctly in that connection.

When the range is completely cool and disconnected from power, check the owner’s manual to see whether your element is designed to be removed. If it is, reinstall it exactly as directed. Do not probe the receptacle with tools or try to bend internal contacts.

GE Appliances says that on certain removable-coil models, a suspect element can be tried in another same-size receptacle. That test applies only when the manufacturer allows the elements to be removed and exchanged. It does not apply to sealed radiant or induction cooktops.

If several burners fail, think about the power supply

Most full-size electric ranges in the U.S. and Canada use a dedicated 208- or 240-volt circuit. A partial power problem can sometimes leave the clock or lights working while the heating elements do not receive the power they need.

If a breaker has tripped, reset it once in the normal way. If it trips again, stop there. Repeated breaker trips are not something to work around; they call for an electrician or appliance technician to check the circuit and the range.

Do not diagnose a coil only by how red it looks

Newer coil elements may include temperature-limiting technology and may not glow the same way older coils did. Whirlpool explains that parts of some modern coils cycle while other portions remain energized. A burner that looks less red than an old one is not automatically defective.

The more useful clues are whether a suitable pan heats normally, whether one zone stays completely cold while the others work, and whether the control responds consistently.

Know when the homeowner checks are finished

Stop using the cooktop if you see arcing, smell burnt wiring or plastic, find scorch marks around a coil receptacle, or a breaker trips repeatedly. Do not remove the cooktop to test live voltage unless you are qualified to work on high-power electrical equipment.

If one zone still will not heat after the cookware, controls, and model-approved checks have been ruled out, the fault may be in the heating element, burner power control, temperature sensor, induction electronics, or wiring. That is the point where internal diagnosis becomes more useful than more resets.

Comparison is the fastest clue. Whether the problem follows a pan, stays with one burner, or affects the whole appliance tells you far more than simply knowing that โ€œthe burner doesn’t heat.โ€
