The dryer drum turns, the timer advances, but when you open the door the laundry is still cold and wet. That detail matters: a turning drum does not prove the heating system is receiving everything it needs.
On many electric dryers, the motor can still run when one side of the supply needed for heat is missing. A gas dryer can tumble normally even when the burner has no gas. Before assuming the heating element failed, separate three possibilities: a no-heat cycle, missing energy for the heater, or an airflow problem.
First make sure the selected cycle is supposed to heat
Air Only, Air Fluff and similar settings intentionally tumble without heat. Many automatic cycles also include a cool-down period near the end.
Follow your manual and run a simple test: with the drum empty, select a heated timed cycle and let it operate for several minutes. Open the door and check whether the interior is clearly warm.
If there is heat but laundry still takes much too long to dry, the problem may be airflow, load size or excessively wet clothes rather than a total loss of heating.
An electric dryer can tumble after losing part of its power
Full-size electric dryers in the U.S. commonly use a 240-volt supply across a two-pole circuit. Whirlpool explains that one side can still operate the motor while the heating circuit no longer receives the power it needs.
Check the electrical panel for the dryer’s paired breakers and reset them according to the appliance instructions if one has tripped.
If a breaker trips again, stop resetting it. A repeatedly tripping circuit needs electrical or appliance diagnosis. Do not open the receptacle, terminal block or dryer panels to test live voltage unless you are qualified to do that work.
A gas dryer can also tumble with no burner heat
Gas models use electricity for the motor and controls plus gas for the burner. Check only owner-accessible conditions identified in the manual, such as whether the gas shutoff valve is in the correct operating position and whether there is a known service interruption.
If you smell gas, stop testing the dryer. Follow your gas utility’s emergency instructions, leave the area as directed and contact the appropriate emergency or utility service. Do not keep cycling the appliance to see whether the smell disappears.
Lint screen and vent matter even when some heat is present
A heavily loaded lint screen or obstructed exhaust reduces airflow. That more often produces very long drying times than a completely cold drum, but it deserves attention because it is also a fire-safety issue.
CPSC warns that lint accumulation in a dryer or exhaust duct can block airflow, create excessive heat and contribute to fires.
Clean the lint screen before or after every load. While the dryer runs, check the outside termination to make sure the flap opens and exhaust air is moving. Weak airflow calls for an inspection of the duct for lint buildup, kinks or crushing.
Look behind the dryer too
A dryer pushed hard against the wall can collapse or kink its exhaust connector. Move the appliance only as far as you can do safely and inspect the visible path.
CPSC recommends rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal ducting rather than plastic or thin foil accordion-style material, which can trap lint and crush more easily. The actual installation should follow the dryer manual and local code.
The load can create a false “no heat” diagnosis
An oversized load leaves too little room for warm air to circulate through the clothes. And if the washer delivered soaking-wet laundry because it did not spin correctly, the dryer starts with much more water than expected.
If you feel some heat, try a small load of merely damp items. If that load dries normally, review load size and washer spin performance.
If the drum stays cold even when empty on a heated cycle, return to the power or heating-system side of the diagnosis.
When the problem is inside the appliance
Electric dryers use a heating element; gas dryers use a burner system. Both also rely on thermostats, sensors and thermal safety devices.
A thermal fuse is designed to open when unsafe temperature conditions occur. Replacing one without finding out why overheating happened can leave the original cause—such as restricted airflow—untouched.
Whirlpool recommends professional service when basic checks do not restore heat and the repair requires accessing heating elements or thermal fuses.
Signs that turn this into a safety problem
Stop using the dryer if you notice a persistent burning smell, smoke, sparks, unusually hot cabinet surfaces, a gas odor or a circuit breaker that repeatedly trips.
A dryer that takes progressively longer to dry also deserves attention even if it still feels warm. CPSC notes that clothes remaining damp after a normal cycle or increasingly long drying times can be signs of a blocked lint screen or exhaust path.
When to call for service
If the cycle is correct, power or gas supply is available, the lint screen and exhaust have good airflow, and the drum still never warms, further diagnosis usually requires disassembly and electrical or combustion measurements.
Heating elements, igniters, gas valves, thermal fuses, thermostats, sensors and control boards are not components to bypass “just to test.” Thermal safety parts exist to protect the appliance from overheating.
Separate “no heat” from “not drying” before buying a part
Ask one precise question: is the drum truly cold, or is it warm while the clothes remain wet?
Cold points first toward cycle and energy supply. Warm-but-slow points first toward airflow, load and initial moisture. That simple distinction can keep you from replacing a heater when the exhaust duct was the real problem.
And with a dryer, airflow is more than performance. It is safety. A machine that is heating or exhausting abnormally should be corrected before it is sent through more and more cycles.
