Measure or look up standby power

A properly rated plug-in energy meter can compare operating and standby watts. Multiply standby power by annual hours to see whether changing habits is worthwhile.

Group small standby loads with a suitable smart strip

A television, game console, and peripherals can sometimes be switched together if they do not need essential standby functions. Do not use a strip for loads that require direct wall connection or equipment that must stay powered.

Do not unplug refrigeration, alarms, or essential network equipment for tiny savings

Refrigerators, freezers, alarms, and some security systems need continuous power. The cost of lost function or safety outweighs any standby savings.

Prioritize major loads before chasing tiny standby draws

Heating, cooling, water heating, dryers, and other high-power loads usually dominate the bill. Cutting runtime or improving efficiency there can save far more than unplugging a modern charger with almost no standby draw.
