Leaks, clogs, drains and water problems—what to try and when to stop.
Toilet bowl water level is set by the internal trap geometry and by how much water the refill tube returns after a flush. A low level can result from a misplaced refill tube, incomplete refill, siphoning related to venting, or a crack that slowly loses water.
A toilet bowl that stays unusually full often has a downstream restriction causing the level to rise before draining. If water approaches the rim during a flush, do not flush again; a partial blockage can turn into an overflow. A high tank level is a separate issue.
Shutting off water to the whole house means operating the main indoor supply valve or, in some homes, a valve near the meter. During a major leak, close the accessible valve in its intended direction, open a faucet to confirm flow falls, and do not force a corroded valve that could break.
When cold pressure is normal but hot pressure is low, the restriction is probably on the hot-water side: a partly closed valve, sediment, a mixing cartridge or aerator, a restricted pipe, or the water heater itself. Comparing several fixtures helps show whether the issue is local or house-wide.
A few drops immediately after shutoff can simply be water draining from the showerhead or pipe, but dripping that continues for minutes or hours usually means the valve is not sealing completely. Mineral deposits, a worn cartridge, or damaged seals are common causes, and duration and location help distinguish them.
A weak toilet flush can come from low tank water, a flapper that closes too soon, mineral buildup in rim jets, or a partial blockage in the bowl or drain. If the toilet does flush but often needs two attempts, first check how much water is actually released before reaching for drain chemicals.
Gurgling occurs when air and water are not moving normally through the drain system. If it happens at only one fixture, a nearby restriction may be involved; if several sinks, a shower, or a toilet react to one another, plumbing venting or a deeper main-drain restriction becomes more likely.
A pipe leaking behind a wall usually creates a localized pattern: an expanding stain, soft paint or drywall, musty odor, water sound, or meter movement with no intended use. First confirm whether the damp area follows plumbing and whether it changes when a nearby fixture is used.
A toilet that will not flush may have an empty tank, a disconnected chain or mechanism, a flapper that does not lift, or a clog that prevents drainage. Before flushing repeatedly, check the bowl and tank water levels so a blockage does not turn into an overflow.
Water hammer is a pressure wave created when moving water stops very quickly, such as when a washing-machine solenoid valve closes. It is recognized by a bang that coincides with shutoff; prevention involves valve-closing behavior, pressure, and absorbing the pressure wave rather than randomly fastening pipes.
A hidden leak may first appear as higher water use, dampness, odor, mold, or meter movement when no water is intentionally running. The most useful approach is to confirm unexplained water use and then isolate areas rather than opening walls blindly.
A showerhead can drip from its threaded connection, an internal washer, or simply from water left inside after the shower is turned off. If water keeps coming from the spray holes for a long time with the control off, the shower valve may be the cause rather than the head itself.
