Rinse aid is not required for every dishwasher to wash dishes, but it can improve water sheeting and reduce droplets, spotting, and drying problems, especially with hard water or items that retain water. If dishes already come out clean and dry, there is no need to add it automatically; if spotting or wet plastics are a problem, it may help.
Dishwasher salt is regeneration salt of the appropriate grain size for the built-in water softener in certain machines, not table salt to sprinkle into the tub. It is used only when the dishwasher has a dedicated reservoir and the manual calls for it, commonly in hard-water areas. Some markets and dishwasher designs do not use this system.
Only plastic containers labeled or identified as microwave-safe should be heated in a microwave. Margarine tubs, yogurt containers, takeout boxes, and other plastics intended for cold storage can warp or melt from hot food. If the container is not marked for microwave use, transfer the food to glass, glass-ceramic, or another compatible vessel.
Plain white paper towels that the manufacturer considers microwave-safe can generally be used to cover food or absorb small splatters. Not every paper product is equivalent: brown paper bags, newspapers, printed paper, metallic elements, or unidentified recycled materials should not be assumed safe for microwave use.
A dishwasher that starts but does not take in water may have a closed supply valve, kinked hose, door that is not confirming closed, a stuck float, or a failed inlet valve. Before taking anything apart, listen to what happens at startup and check supply, door, and user-accessible parts with the appliance off.
Rinse aid lowers water surface tension during the final rinse so water sheets off more easily. That can reduce droplets, mineral spotting, and wet dishes, especially with hard water or energy-efficient drying. It is not detergent and goes in a separate dispenser when the dishwasher supports it.
An ice maker can stop producing because the freezer is too warm, the water supply is off or weak, the filter is restricted, the shutoff arm or sensor is in the stop position, or ice is jammed. Before taking anything apart, confirm temperature, controls, and accessible water flow.
Removing refrigerator odor means eliminating the source rather than masking the interior with fragrance. Work in sections so food stays cold, discard spoiled food and spills, wash shelves and drawers with a compatible cleaner, and dry everything before reloading.
Safely defrosting a freezer means protecting food first and then letting ice melt without sharp tools, flame, or intense heat. Switch off or unplug the appliance as the manual directs, contain meltwater with towels, and clean and dry the interior before cooling it again.
Oven smoke often comes from grease, spilled food, or cleaning residue burning off, but dense smoke, an electrical odor, flames, or abnormal behavior in a new oven call for a different response. Turn the appliance off if the smoke is more than light and clearly explained by food residue.
A dishwasher that will not start may have lost power, have an unlatched door, an active delay-start setting, locked controls, or a water-supply problem. Begin with the panel and accessible checks; if a breaker trips, there is a burning smell, or water is near electrical connections, stop trying to restart it.
White residue on dishes may be poorly rinsed detergent, hard-water minerals, or a combination of both. Useful clues include whether the film dissolves with vinegar on an acid-safe item, whether it is strongest on glass, and whether the machine has adequate water, temperature, and rinse aid for the cycle.
