If a garage door opens but will not close, safety sensors, an obstruction, travel-limit settings, or a mechanical issue are common causes. Start by clearing the opening and checking sensors externally; do not defeat a reversal system to force the door closed.
Clear the full door path
Remove bicycles, boxes, ice, stones, and anything near the threshold or tracks. A small object can trigger safety protection or prevent the door from seating even when it is not obvious from the control.
Clean and align the safety sensors
The safety sensors near the floor need a clear line of sight. Gently clean lenses, check that brackets were not bumped, and use the manufacturer’s indicators; do not bypass or cover the system to keep the door moving.
Use the wall control to separate remote issues
If only the remote fails, check programming, battery, and interference. If the wall control also fails, focus on sensors, controls, and the mechanism rather than buying a new remote.
A crooked, binding door or loose cable needs service
Do not force a door that descends crooked, jumps the track, or has damaged springs or cables. Those parts carry substantial tension; stop using the opener until the mechanical problem is repaired.
