Some silk garments can be washed at home, while others are labeled for professional cleaning only. Let the care label decide: if washing is allowed, use cool water, gentle movement, and a mild detergent, and avoid wringing or direct heat while drying.
Check the care label, trims, and colorfastness
A structured silk garment, lining, embellishment, or unstable dye may require professional cleaning even when the fiber itself seems washable. If color transfer is a concern, test an inside area with a damp cloth before immersion.
Hand wash gently when the label permits it
Use cool or slightly lukewarm water and a small amount of detergent intended for delicates. Move the garment gently for a short time; do not scrub sections together or leave it soaking for hours.
Rinse without wringing
Change the water until it runs clear and press gently to release liquid. To remove more water, roll the garment in a clean towel; wringing can crease or distort wet silk.
Dry away from strong sun and heat
Reshape the garment and dry it as the label directs, often flat or on a supportive hanger. Avoid radiators, hot dryers, and strong sun, which can shrink, fade, or weaken the fabric.
