Fall home maintenance prepares a house for rain, cold weather, and increased heating use. A useful checklist prioritizes moving water away from the home, heating equipment, alarms, air sealing, and freeze protection while leaving unsafe roof, tall-tree, and combustion-system work to qualified professionals.
Start with roof drainage from a safe access point
Inspect roofing, gutters, and downspouts from the ground or a safe platform, clear leaves only when access is safe, and make sure water discharges away from the foundation. Do not work on a wet or steep roof or near overhead power lines.
Prepare heating and ventilation before cold weather
Replace or clean filters when due, clear vents, and test heating before it is needed daily. Chimneys, combustion appliances, boilers, and furnaces with odor, smoke, or abnormal operation need qualified service.
Test alarms and review emergency readiness
Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms according to manufacturer instructions, check their age, and replace batteries where applicable. Review extinguishers, flashlights, exit routes, and supplies for power outages.
Protect plumbing and close out the outdoor season
Disconnect hoses, winterize irrigation as appropriate for the climate, and protect vulnerable pipes before freezing weather. Check weatherstripping, windows, and doors, but do not seal combustion air openings or required ventilation.
