How to Remove a Stripped Screw

Use the exact driver bit and straight pressure

Clean the screw head and use a bit that fills the recess properly. Keep the driver aligned with the screw axis and press firmly while turning slowly; an undersized bit will round off what remains.

Add grip before drilling

A thin rubber band between the bit and head can help with light damage, and locking pliers may work if enough of the head protrudes. Avoid high-force tricks near fragile surfaces or electrical components.

A screw extractor requires centered drilling

For heavier damage, a screw extractor works best with a small, centered pilot hole sized according to its instructions. Drilling off-center can damage the threaded part or break the extractor, which is difficult to remove.

Stop if the screw belongs to a critical component

Screws in electrical panels, energized appliances, structural hardware, or safety-critical assemblies are poor places to experiment with drilling and extraction. Isolate power and use the appropriate service procedure when needed.
