The dryer lint filter should be clear before or after every load because a packed layer reduces airflow and lengthens drying time. Beyond peeling lint off by hand, some screens benefit from occasional washing when softeners or laundry products leave an invisible film.
Remove lint every load
Pull the filter out with the dryer stopped and cool, then peel lint from the screen with your fingers. Do not push debris into the filter slot; buildup around the screen can restrict airflow and make later cleaning harder.
Check whether the screen has a residue film
Occasionally place a few drops of water on the screen. If they bead up and do not pass through easily, softener or product residue may be coating the mesh even when it looks clean.
Wash the screen with mild soap and water if allowed
Use a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and let the filter dry completely before reinstalling it. Do not distort the mesh or use sharp tools that can open holes and allow lint to pass through.
A clean lint screen does not replace vent maintenance
If clothes take longer to dry, the dryer runs unusually hot, or there is a burning smell, the vent and exterior outlet also need attention. The lint screen catches a lot of lint, but not all of it, and a restricted vent raises fire risk.
