An oven can cook unevenly because of rack position, airflow, incomplete preheating, pans blocking heat, or a real difference between set temperature and cavity temperature. Start with simple checks before changing calibration.
Allow a full preheat
On some ovens, the preheat indicator can signal before the walls and air are fully stabilized. Allow the recommended preheat time and avoid repeatedly opening the door early in cooking.
Use the rack position intended for the food
A pan too close to a heating element can brown one area before the center cooks. Center cookware when practical and do not cover entire racks with aluminum foil.
Leave room for airflow
Large pans pushed against walls or several dishes packed together disrupt circulation. In convection ovens, do not block air inlets or outlets; rotate pans only when the recipe and oven behavior call for it.
Verify temperature before calibration or repair
A properly placed oven thermometer can show whether there is a repeatable bias over several cycles. If differences are large, an element fails to heat, or the fan does not run, consult the manual or arrange service.
