Mold needs moisture and a surface containing nutrients; spores are naturally present in the environment. The useful question is therefore not where the spore came from, but what is keeping the material damp enough for growth.
Leaks create localized moisture
Plumbing, roofs, windows, and appliances can keep a small area continuously damp. A stain that worsens after rain or water use points toward a source that should be repaired first.
Condensation forms on cold surfaces
Windows, exterior corners, and pipes can become cold enough for water vapor to condense. High indoor humidity, limited ventilation, and thermal bridges increase that risk.
Incomplete drying after water damage leaves hidden moisture
Drywall, insulation, carpet, and wood can feel dry at the surface while retaining moisture internally. Rapid, complete drying after a leak or flood reduces the chance of later growth.
Cleaning without moisture control leads to recurrence
Painting, spraying, or wiping the surface may improve appearance, but mold returns when moisture remains. Find and correct the moisture source before treating the cosmetic repair as complete.
