MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and describes how effectively a filter captures different particle sizes. A higher number captures smaller particles but can also increase airflow resistance if the system was not designed for that filter.
Start with what the system supports
Check the equipment manual, filter rack label, or installer recommendation. Many homes perform well with a midrange rating, but there is no single number that is best for every blower and duct system.
Higher MERV does not always mean better system performance
A highly restrictive filter in a system with little airflow margin can reduce flow, increase noise, or hurt comfort. Filter area and depth matter too; a deeper media filter may achieve high efficiency with less resistance than a thin one.
Allergies and smoke can justify better filtration
If the goal is reducing fine particles, smoke, or allergens, choose a rating the equipment can handle and consider a room-sized portable air cleaner as well. An HVAC filter only cleans air while the blower is moving air through it.
Watch airflow after changing ratings
After changing filter rating, pay attention to noise, airflow, and cycling. If flow drops noticeably or the filter bows, return to a compatible option and have the system assessed before adding more restriction.
