Inspect the backing first

If rubber backing is cracked, sticky, or flaking, machine washing can accelerate the damage and send fragments into the washer. A badly deteriorated mat is usually better replaced.

Wash with compatible items without overloading

Balance the drum with another mat or towels if the washer manual allows. One heavy item can cause vibration during spin, while several large mats can exceed the machine’s capacity.

Use modest detergent and avoid high heat

Follow the label temperature and do not add extra detergent simply because the item is used in a bathroom. Excess product can remain in the fibers and leave the mat stiff or slippery.

Dry completely before putting it back

Rubber-backed mats often need air drying or low heat. Do not place a damp mat on wood flooring or moisture-sensitive joints because trapped moisture can damage finishes or cause odor.
