How to Unshrink Clothes: What Actually Works

Not every shrunken garment can return to its original size. Wool and some knits may relax partially with water and gentle reshaping, while cotton severely shrunk by heat or damaged fibers may not fully recover.

Identify the fiber and what caused the shrinkage

Read the care label before wetting the garment. Felted wool, heat-shrunk cotton, and distorted synthetics behave differently; a method that helps a wool knit can make another fiber worse.

Soak in lukewarm water, not heat

For garments that tolerate water, a gentle soak can relax fibers. On wool or knitwear, a wool-safe product or a small amount of suitable conditioner may make reshaping easier without rubbing or wringing.

Reshape gradually on a flat surface

Press out excess water between towels and stretch gradually in several directions, comparing with original measurements or a similar garment. Pulling hard all at once can distort seams and make the garment uneven.

Know when the change is permanent

If wool has felted, the fabric has hardened, or seams no longer match the body, more stretching rarely restores the garment. For valuable pieces, a cleaner or textile specialist can assess options without promising full recovery.
