Washer dispenser layouts vary by model, so the symbols and manual are the primary reference. Many machines have separate areas for main-wash detergent, prewash, fabric softener, and bleach, but their positions should not be guessed.
Find the main-wash symbol
The main-wash compartment is often marked with II on many European-style washers, while North American machines may use a different tray or reservoir. Follow the markings on the dispenser itself.
Fabric softener usually has a MAX line
Fabric softener is released during rinsing, so it belongs in its dedicated compartment rather than being mixed directly with detergent. Do not fill above the MAX line because the dispenser may siphon early.
Bleach needs the designated dispenser
If the washer has a bleach dispenser, use only the type allowed by the manual and follow the dose. Never pour concentrated bleach directly onto clothes or mix it with ammonia, vinegar, or other acids.
Pods usually go in the drum, not the dispenser drawer
Many detergent pods are designed to go in the empty drum before clothes, but exceptions exist. Check both package and manual; product placed in the wrong compartment may dissolve poorly or dispense at the wrong time.
