Grain beetles commonly arrive inside a dry food product and then spread through the pantry. Control starts by finding the source package rather than spraying shelves where wandering adults happen to be seen.
Inspect all vulnerable dry foods
Check flour, cereal, rice, pasta, nuts, spices, pet food, and seeds. Look for insects, larvae, unusual dust, or damaged packaging, including products that have never been opened.
Isolate and discard infested products
Seal an infested package in a bag before moving it so insects are not spread. If nearby products are questionable, isolate them for observation or use a treatment method appropriate for the food and packaging.
Vacuum cracks and clean residue without spraying food
Remove crumbs and food dust from corners, shelf-pin holes, and seams. Empty the vacuum outdoors and never apply insecticide to food-contact surfaces unless the product label specifically allows that use.
Move new dry goods into sturdy containers
Rigid sealed containers limit spread and make an infestation easier to isolate. If beetles continue appearing weeks after known sources are removed, inspect forgotten dry foods in other storage areas.
