A refrigerator may run for long periods in hot weather, after frequent door openings, or after loading food, but nearly nonstop operation can point to temperature settings, dirt, ventilation, door seals, or controls.
Check actual temperature first
Use a refrigerator thermometer and compare it with the setting. If the compartment is colder than necessary, an overly low setpoint can increase run time.
Check the door, gaskets, and usage
A door that does not seal or frequent openings let warm, humid air in. Clean the gasket and make sure packages do not block closure.
Keep airflow and accessible condenser areas clear
Blocked vents or accessible condenser coils covered with dust make heat rejection harder. Clean only manufacturer-designated areas, disconnecting power when required.
Poor cooling plus nonstop running needs diagnosis
Fans, defrost components, refrigerant systems, or controls can fail. Do not open the refrigerant circuit or internal electrical panels to investigate them.
