If the washer already smells, cleaning needs to reach places that retain detergent, lint, and moisture: the gasket, dispenser, accessible filter, and drum. This page focuses on cleaning; odor causes are diagnosed separately.
Clean the gasket and dispensers
Remove visible residue with products and methods approved by the manufacturer. On front-loaders, inspect gasket folds without using tools that can cut the rubber.
Check the user-accessible filter
If the manual provides a pump filter for user maintenance, prepare for residual water and clean it as directed. Do not remove panels not intended for user access.
Run the recommended cleaning cycle
Use the self-clean cycle or the temperature and cleaner specified by the manufacturer. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other acids.
Dry and ventilate afterward
Afterward, dry areas that retain water and leave the door and dispenser open when safe. If odor returns quickly, detergent dosing, drainage, or a persistent moisture source needs attention.
