A new noise matters more than a normal sound that has always been present. Whistling, banging, humming, and clicking suggest different causes; note when it happens and where it comes from.
Separate normal expansion from repeated banging
Ducts and pipes can tick as they warm. Loud banging, new vibration, or noise that worsens every cycle deserves inspection of supports, flow, or equipment.
Whistling often points to restricted flow
Filters, vents, valves, or restrictions can create whistling. Do not adjust internal valves or close many outlets to “balance” a system without understanding it.
Humming and rattling require locating the source
Loose panels, blowers, pumps, or motors can vibrate. If the sound comes from an electrical component or is rapidly worsening, stop use and arrange service.
Odor, smoke, or alarms change the response
Noise accompanied by gas odor, burning smell, smoke, or a carbon monoxide alarm should not be investigated by opening equipment. Follow the appropriate emergency procedure.
