There is no single gutter-cleaning schedule for every home. Nearby trees, roof type, and storms matter more than a fixed date; inspections after leaf fall and major weather are often more useful.
Start with what falls on the roof
Trees that shed leaves, needles, or seeds can require several cleanings a year. A home with little nearby vegetation may need less.
Inspect after major storms
Branches, hail, and wind can create sudden blockages. From a safe ground position, look for overflow or water running behind the gutter.
Include downspouts and outlets
A clean gutter can still fail if the downspout is blocked. Confirm that water discharges away from the foundation.
Let access safety decide who cleans them
Tall roofs, steep slopes, uneven ground, or work that requires roof access are reasons to hire a professional. Do not clean during rain, ice, or wind. A simple inspection log helps in tree-heavy properties: note when gutters were cleared and what debris was present. That makes the next interval evidence-based instead of relying on an arbitrary twice-a-year rule.
