A shower curtain can collect soap residue, minerals, and surface mold, but not every curtain is washed the same way. Separate fabric curtains from plastic liners and follow the care label.
Remove rings and identify the material
Fabric, polyester, and vinyl liners can have different temperature and machine limits. If the manufacturer prohibits machine washing, clean it by hand.
Pretreat soap film or surface mold
Use a compatible cleaner on the lower edge and folds. Never mix bleach with acids, vinegar, or ammonia.
Wash with low agitation
If machine washing is allowed, use a gentle cycle and add towels to cushion a flexible liner. Avoid very hot water on plastics.
Hang it to dry completely
Spread the curtain out so moisture is not trapped in folds. Leaving it extended after showers helps delay mold returning. If the lower edge becomes dirty again quickly, also check ventilation and whether the liner stays pressed against a wet tub. Cleaning without improving drying conditions leads to fast recurrence.
