Only some shoes are suitable for machine washing. Durable fabric and some synthetics generally tolerate it better than leather, suede, delicate glued materials, or highly structured footwear.
Check the care label or manufacturer guidance
If the manufacturer advises against machine washing, use another method. Brush off dried mud and heavy debris before the shoes get wet.
Remove laces and insoles
Clean them separately according to their materials. This improves access to the shoe interior and helps removable parts rinse and dry properly.
Protect the shoes and washer drum
Place shoes in a mesh bag or washable pillowcase and add old towels to cushion impacts. Use a gentle cycle with cool or lukewarm water if the label permits.
Air-dry and restore shape
Stuff the shoes with white paper or another absorbent material and replace it if saturated. Avoid dryers and heaters because heat can distort soles and adhesives.
