Match the stain to weather
If the stain appears or worsens during rain, especially wind-driven rain, the roof becomes more likely. A stain that develops in dry weather and follows shower or appliance use may have another source.
Inspect the attic from a safe route
Use a flashlight to look for wet framing, water tracks, damp insulation, or rusty fasteners. Do not step on insulation or surfaces that are not intended to support body weight.
Pay attention to penetrations and flashing
Chimneys, vents, skylights, valleys, and roof transitions are common leak points. Water can travel along framing and appear far from the actual opening.
Do not walk a wet roof to prove the diagnosis
Exterior roof inspection requires safe conditions and proper equipment. If you cannot locate the source from a safe access point, professional inspection is preferable to risking a fall.
