An air freshener can make a room smell different for a few hours, but it does not remove a musty odor. That smell is usually information: something remains damp, dried poorly or is supporting microbial growth on a visible or hidden material.
EPA says a moldy or musty odor can suggest mold growth and should be investigated. The useful strategy is to trace the smell back to the moisture that sustains it.
Start by mapping where the smell changes
Walk through the home with interior doors open and then closed. Compare rooms, closets, window areas, the basement, laundry area and spaces near bathrooms.
Also note when the odor gets stronger: after rain, when the air conditioner starts, after the house has been closed for days, or on cool mornings with window condensation. Timing can reveal the source.
Look for water before looking for mold
Check under sinks, around toilets and showers, the water heater, washer, refrigerator, window frames and any ceiling or wall stains.
A small leak that keeps a porous material damp continuously can create more odor than a large spill that was dried promptly.
High relative humidity can maintain the problem without a plumbing leak
EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60% and, where possible, roughly 30โ50%. In basements, bathrooms and humid climates, a hygrometer can tell you whether โheavy airโ corresponds to actual high humidity.
Ventilation, exhaust fans and dehumidification may be needed, but they should accompany repair of any water intrusion.
Carpet and furniture can hold moisture without looking wet
Carpet over a previously damp floor, the back of a sofa against a cool wall or cardboard boxes in a basement can retain moisture and odor.
Lift accessible edges and inspect the underside of textiles and furniture. Porous materials that smell strongly and cannot be dried completely may need specialized cleaning or replacement.
The first 24โ48 hours after water damage matter
EPA advises drying water-damaged areas and items within about 24โ48 hours to help prevent mold growth. Remove water, increase safe air movement and use dehumidification where appropriate.

Visible mold on a hard surface should be cleaned and dried
EPA recommends cleaning mold from hard surfaces with detergent and water and drying completely. The essential step is correcting the moisture that allowed it to grow.
You generally do not need to identify the mold species before addressing a small visible area. Painting over it or adding fragrance without cleaning and drying does not solve the cause.
Porous materials require a different decision
Ceiling tiles, heavily affected drywall, insulation, carpet and other absorbent materials can be difficult to clean completely when growth penetrates them.
EPA notes that some moldy absorbent materials may need replacement, depending on the extent and the water source.
Not every musty smell comes from mold
Dry plumbing traps, damp wood, stored textiles, potting soil and poorly ventilated basements can create similar odors.
If you find no moisture or mold clues, check these sources methodically instead of assuming there is hidden growth inside walls.
Odor absorbers are secondary tools
After the source is corrected, fresh air and odor-adsorbing materials can help with the remaining smell. Before that, they only mask or compete with it.
Do not use ozone generators or improvised chemical mixtures as substitutes for drying and repair.
When professional help makes sense
Call for help when the odor is strong but the source cannot be located, water damage is extensive, HVAC contamination is suspected, structural materials are affected, moisture keeps returning or visible growth covers a large area.
Professional investigation is also reasonable when finding the moisture requires opening walls, ceilings or insulation.
The odor stays gone when the cause is gone
Locate โ measure humidity โ stop the water โ dry โ clean or replace material โ ventilate. That order works better than starting with deodorizer.
A musty smell is information about the building. If it returns after airing out, the real question is not which fragrance to use, but what is still damp.
