How to Tell Bed Bug Bites From Other Bites

Bites alone cannot confirm bed bugs. Mosquitoes, fleas, skin irritation, and other causes can create similar marks, so reliable identification requires combining skin symptoms with evidence around the sleeping area.

Bites alone cannot confirm bed bugs. Mosquitoes, fleas, skin irritation, and other causes can create similar marks, so reliable identification requires combining skin symptoms with evidence around the sleeping area.

Do not use the skin pattern as the only test

Lines or clusters can occur with bed bugs, but that pattern is not unique. Some people do not develop visible reactions to bed bug bites at all.

Inspect the mattress, bed frame, and headboard

Look for insects, shed skins, dark spotting, and small blood marks, especially in seams, cracks, and joints. Identifiable physical evidence is more meaningful than bite appearance alone.

Compare other exposures

Bites concentrated around the ankles can occur with fleas; mosquitoes may bite indoors or outdoors. Dermatitis and allergic reactions can also resemble insect bites.

Get medical care for significant reactions

Trouble breathing, major swelling, signs of infection, or a severe reaction need medical evaluation. To confirm the pest itself, a pest professional can identify specimens or environmental evidence.
