“Low water pressure” can describe very different problems. A weak shower with a normal kitchen faucet points to a local restriction. Every faucet becoming weak yesterday points toward the supply, a valve, a regulator or a leak. If only hot water is affected, whole-house pressure may not be the real issue at all.
The fastest way to avoid guessing is to define the scope of the symptom: where it happens, on hot or cold, and when it started.
First confirm whether the whole house is affected
Test several fixtures separately: kitchen faucet, bathroom sink, shower and an outdoor spigot if available. Compare hot and cold.
If one faucet is weak, look at its aerator, cartridge or local shutoff. If only the shower is weak, the showerhead, hose or mixing valve may be responsible. A house-wide problem needs a broader path.
Pressure and flow are not the same thing
Pressure is the force available in the plumbing; flow is the volume that comes out over time. A clogged aerator can reduce flow while the home’s supply pressure remains unchanged.
That is why “not much water comes out” does not automatically mean the utility pressure is low.
If the change was sudden, check outside the house too
Utility maintenance, a water-main break or work in a multi-unit building can temporarily reduce pressure. Apartments and condos may also depend on shared pumps or regulators.
If neighbors notice the same change at the same time, contact the building manager or water provider before taking apart your plumbing.
Make sure the main shutoff is fully open
After plumbing work, a main valve can be left partly closed. Identify the correct valve and confirm its position without forcing an old or corroded mechanism.
A valve that binds, leaks or looks damaged is a plumber’s job. Breaking a main shutoff can turn low pressure into a much larger problem.
Measure pressure instead of estimating it by feel
EPA WaterSense says water-using fixtures generally perform best when incoming service pressure is about 45 to 60 psi. A simple pressure gauge can be attached to a hose bib with faucets, appliances and irrigation turned off.
Normal static pressure followed by a severe drop when water flows can point toward a restriction, pressure regulator, supply pipe or insufficient capacity. Low static pressure from the start points more toward supply, leakage or regulation.
Look for leaks before trying to raise pressure
A leak continuously consumes available flow. Check running toilets, faucets, the water heater, water-connected appliances and visible damp areas.
If all use is off and a water meter still shows movement, a leak investigation may be warranted, although meter types vary.
The pressure-reducing valve may be involved
Many homes have a pressure-reducing valve, or PRV, near the service entrance. It protects the plumbing when utility pressure is higher than the home should receive.
An aging or sticking PRV can create low or unstable pressure. Do not simply turn it up without measuring; excessive pressure can damage fixture valves, appliance hoses and plumbing.
Older piping can restrict available flow
Internal corrosion, mineral scale or undersized pipes can limit flow, especially when several fixtures run together.
If the problem has worsened slowly over years and is strongest in older portions of the home, inspection of the piping may be more useful than changing individual faucets.
Private-well homes use a different pressure system
With a well, low pressure may involve the pump, pressure switch, pressure tank, filters or well yield. Observe system gauges only within the owner’s maintenance instructions.
Pumps and electrical pressure controls are not good components to improvise on. Rapid cycling, failure to reach pressure or unexplained pressure loss deserves a well or plumbing professional.
Higher pressure is not automatically better
Cranking a regulator above what the system needs can create water hammer, leaks and accelerated wear. EPA’s goal is a reasonable service range, not the highest possible number.
Stable, adequate pressure under real use is what matters.
When to call the utility or a plumber
Call the utility when incoming service pressure appears low outside the home. Call a plumber for leaks, damaged valves, a suspected PRV problem, severely restricted piping or pressure loss you cannot localize.
Good troubleshooting starts by mapping the problem: one fixture, one temperature, or the whole house. Only then does measuring pressure and tracing the supply line become useful.
