Do not clean gutters in rain, strong wind, ice, or from an unstable ladder. The maintenance can wait for safe conditions.
Prepare the ground and ladder
Set the ladder on firm level footing and away from doors that can open into it. Maintain three points of contact and reposition the ladder instead of leaning far sideways.
Remove leaves and sludge in sections
Wear sturdy gloves; gutters can contain sharp metal edges, fasteners, insects, and decomposing material. Collect debris in a bucket or tarp.
Check the downspout
After solids are removed, a controlled amount of water can confirm flow when the discharge point is open. Backing up at the inlet suggests a clog or drainage issue.
Do not bend the gutter while working
A gutter pulling away from the fascia, missing hangers, or sloping the wrong direction needs repair rather than more cleaning.
Notice where the water ends up
Downspouts should carry water away from the foundation as the property design requires. A clean gutter that dumps beside the foundation can still contribute to moisture.
For high rooflines, awkward access, or work near electrical lines, use a qualified professional with appropriate equipment.
