How to Wash a Puffer Jacket

“Puffer” describes the construction, not the insulation. Check whether the fill is synthetic, down, or a blend before choosing the wash and drying method.

A puffer can contain polyester insulation, down, or a blend. Identifying the fill keeps you from applying down-specific care to a jacket that does not need it.

Check the label, pockets, and seams

Close zippers, empty pockets, and inspect for tears where insulation could escape. Pretreat stains with a product the garment allows.

For synthetic fill, reduce friction

Cool or lukewarm water and measured detergent are common when the label permits washing. Skip softener when technical finishes or the manufacturer advise against it.

Do not cram a bulky jacket into a small washer

Water and rinse action need to move through the garment. If the jacket cannot move freely, a larger-capacity machine may be safer.

Dry according to the insulation

Some synthetic fills allow low tumble heat; others require air drying. Gently redistribute insulation if it shifts within panels.

Know when it is actually a down jacket

Down needs extra attention to restoring loft and removing moisture from clumps. If the label says down, switch to down-specific care.

Before storage, feel every baffle. A shell can feel dry while seams and thick areas still hold moisture.
