How to Get Sweat Smell Out of Workout Clothes

Synthetic workout clothing can smell clean out of the washer and release odor again as it warms on the body. Oils and residue can remain trapped in the fibers.

With performance fabrics, adding more fragrance or fabric softener can make the problem worse by adding another film to fibers that already hold body oils.

Do not leave sweaty clothing balled up wet

If you cannot wash it immediately, let it air-dry before putting it in a closed hamper. Hours of damp storage encourage persistent odor.

Follow the care label and wash inside out

The inner face receives most sweat and body oil. Use the allowed cycle and temperature; excessive heat can damage stretch fibers and finishes.

Measure detergent

Too much detergent can rinse poorly and trap soil. Do not pack the washer tightly; water and detergent need to move through the garments.

Skip softener when the garment maker discourages it

Softener can reduce wicking and leave a film that holds odor. An enzyme detergent may help on compatible fabrics.

Dry completely

Clothing left damp in the dryer or on a crowded rack can develop a new musty smell. Use the drying method and heat level allowed by the label.

If an entire load smells even when some garments were barely worn, investigate the washer too. Odor concentrated at underarms points more toward the clothing itself.
