“The washer will not spin” can describe several different problems. The drum may never attempt high speed, it may try and stop because the load is out of balance, or the cycle may finish with soaking-wet clothes because the machine never drained properly.
The fastest path to the cause is to watch what happens immediately before spin should begin: is water still in the tub, is the load banging to one side, does the lid or door actually lock, and is there an error code?
Confirm the selected cycle first
Delicate, hand-wash and specialty cycles may use a low spin speed, and some settings allow No Spin. Before looking for a failure, check the selected speed and use a Drain & Spin cycle if your model provides one.
If the machine spins empty or with a small load but not on one particular program, the issue may be the setting rather than the motor.
An unbalanced load can stop high-speed spin
Whirlpool notes that a large or uneven load can reduce spin speed or prevent the cycle from progressing. A sheet wrapped around other clothes, a heavy bath mat or one bulky item can all create imbalance.
Pause the machine, wait for it to unlock and redistribute items loosely. If there is one large item, add compatible pieces when the manual allows it to help balance the basket.
Do not confuse “won’t spin” with “won’t drain”
Many washers will not enter high-speed spin while they detect water in the tub. If you can see standing water, listen for the pump and inspect the drain hose.
A kinked, clogged or incorrectly installed hose can prevent drainage. Follow the installation dimensions for your model rather than copying standpipe measurements from another machine.
Check the pump filter only if your model has a homeowner-accessible one
Some front-load washers provide a pump filter intended for routine maintenance; others do not. Check the manual before opening lower access doors.
If a filter is designed for user service, disconnect the machine as instructed and prepare for residual water. Coins, buttons and small items can restrict flow. If there is no approved access, do not disassemble the pump.
The lid or door must close and lock
Modern washers use a safety lock because the basket reaches high speed. Whirlpool notes that, depending on the model, a lid or door that is not fully closed and latched can prevent spinning.
Remove fabric caught in the seal or latch and watch whether the lock indicator activates. Do not bypass the interlock; if the machine cannot confirm a closed lid or door, the lock needs repair.
An unlevel washer keeps fighting the load
Make sure all feet sit firmly and the cabinet does not rock. An uneven floor or misadjusted foot makes it easier for the load to shift as spin speed rises.
Level the machine according to the manual and avoid improvised cardboard or loose shims. A stable washer spins more reliably and transfers less vibration into the floor.
Too much detergent can leave clothes wetter than expected
In high-efficiency washers, excessive detergent or the wrong detergent can create too many suds. Some machines slow or extend the cycle while trying to control foam.
Use HE detergent when required and dose for load size, concentration and water conditions. If you see persistent suds, do not add more detergent to another cycle.
If the basket tries to accelerate and bangs, stop and rebalance
Heavy knocking during acceleration is a sign of imbalance or an unstable machine. Repeated violent attempts are not a useful way to “let it find balance.”
If this happens with ordinary, well-distributed loads after the washer is leveled, worn suspension, shocks or basket components may need service.
What if the drum never attempts to turn?
If the washer drains properly, the door locks, the cycle calls for spin and the basket still does not move, possible causes shift toward the motor, drive belt on models that use one, sensors, electronic controls or drive components.
Do not open panels to probe motor wiring or electrical parts without proper training. At that point professional diagnosis is more efficient than parts-swapping.
A reset only helps with a one-time control fault
If the owner’s manual provides a reset procedure, it may be reasonable after a power interruption or temporary control lockup. If the symptom returns, preserve the error code and troubleshoot the cause.
Do not make unplugging and replugging the washer the routine solution for every load.
When to call for service
Arrange service if the door will not lock, the pump runs but cannot move water after approved maintenance checks, the drum never turns, you smell an electrical odor, there are severe mechanical knocks, or the problem persists with a balanced load and clear drain path.
A washer needs three things before it can spin properly: it must drain the water, confirm the door or lid is safely closed, and keep the load balanced. If those are all correct and the basket will not accelerate, the fault is probably deeper in the machine.
