Why Does My Microwave Spark?

Sparks in a microwave are usually electrical arcing, a visible discharge that can be triggered by metal, carbonized food residue, metallic decoration, or damage inside the cavity. Stop the microwave when you see it rather than letting the cycle finish.

Look for obvious metal first

A forgotten fork, twist tie, crumpled foil, unapproved tray, or gold-trimmed dish are common causes. The FDA explains that microwaves reflect from metal and that metal cookware generally should not be used unless the manufacturer specifically allows it.

Arcing can happen without a large metal object

Some foods, especially small pieces or foods with concentrated minerals, can occasionally arc. Whirlpool documents this with certain vegetables. If it occurs only with one food and the cavity is undamaged, change the container or cooking method and follow the model manual.

Clean burned-on residue

Grease and carbonized food can create hot spots where energy concentrates. With the unit off and cool, clean the cavity with mild detergent and water according to the manual. Avoid steel wool or abrasives that can damage the interior coating.

Inspect the waveguide cover without removing the cabinet

Many microwaves have a small mica-like cover on an inside wall. If it is burned through, charred, or damaged, stop using the oven and get the model-specific replacement or service guidance. Do not keep testing a unit with a damaged cover.

Cavity and door damage matter

Burned, peeled, or deformed areas can contribute to repeated arcing. A door that does not close firmly is also a stop-use condition. The FDA advises against operating microwaves with damaged hinges, latches, seals, or doors.

Do not remove the outer cover

If obvious metal and residue are gone but arcing continues, the next step is service, not disassembly. Microwaves contain dangerous high-voltage components even after unplugging.

Stop first, remove the obvious trigger, and clean the cavity. If arcing returns or damage is visible, arrange qualified service.
