How to Remove Mold From Wood

Surface mold on sound wood may be cleanable, but the moisture source has to be stopped first and damaged material may need replacement.

Removing mold from wood starts with one distinction: is the growth on the surface of wood that is still solid and dryable, or has moisture damaged the material? Surface growth may be cleanable. Soft, swollen, or deteriorated wood is a different problem.

Stop the water source first

A leak, condensation, exterior intrusion, or persistently high humidity will keep the problem alive. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) puts moisture control at the center of mold control. Repair the cause and allow the wood to dry.

Solid wood and pressed wood behave differently

A solid wood board may tolerate cleaning and sometimes later refinishing. Particleboard, MDF, and other pressed products absorb water readily and can swell or lose strength. If they are soft, distorted, or crumbling, replacement is often more realistic than trying to seal the damage.

For a small area of surface growth

Wear gloves and eye protection and provide ventilation. Clean with a small amount of water and detergent appropriate for the finish rather than soaking the wood. Wipe and dry promptly. EPA guidance notes that mold on hard surfaces can be scrubbed with detergent and water, while complete removal from porous materials can be more difficult.

Do not paint or coat over active mold

A new finish may hide discoloration temporarily but does not remove growth or moisture. EPA guidance warns against painting or caulking moldy surfaces before they are cleaned and dried.

Bleach is not a universal first step

It can alter wood color or finish and is not necessary for every cleanup. If a product is specifically allowed for the material, follow its label exactly and never mix cleaning chemicals. Test any method on an inconspicuous area of finished furniture or flooring.

Sanding adds a dust-control problem

If solid wood remains sound but has superficial staining after cleaning and drying, refinishing may be an option. Sanding mold-affected material creates dust and should not be improvised in an occupied room. Professional cleanup may include a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum after materials are dry.

When replacement or professional help makes more sense

Get help when the area is large, water came from a contaminated flood, odor persists inside a wall or floor assembly, the wood is structural, the material feels soft, or household members have significant respiratory vulnerability.

Cleaning only works when the wood can dry and stay dry. If the moisture path is not fixed, any surface treatment is temporary.
