An air conditioner is never silent, but a new, louder, or distinctly different sound is useful diagnostic information. Before removing anything, identify when the noise starts and what it sounds like.
Rattling or vibration
A grille, exterior panel, loose fastener, or object touching the cabinet can vibrate. With power off, check only accessible exterior items. Do not remove covers that expose fan blades, capacitors, or wiring.
Strong whistling at vents
Whistling can come from air squeezing through a small opening, a partly closed register, or a heavily loaded filter. Check the filter and visible obstructions. A sound from inside equipment or refrigerant lines is not a DIY repair.
Electrical buzzing
A mild hum can be normal, but a new loud buzz—especially when the unit struggles to start—needs attention. Capacitors can retain dangerous charge even after power is removed.
Squealing, scraping, or banging
These sounds can point to motor, bearing, fan, or component-movement problems. Metal ductwork can make occasional expansion noises, but severe repeated bangs deserve investigation.
Ice and airflow problems can change the sound
A clogged filter, closed registers, or a frozen evaporator coil can alter airflow noise. If you see ice, turn cooling off and allow it to thaw, then check the filter. Repeated freezing needs professional diagnosis.
When to shut the system down
Stop using it if you smell burning or electrical odor, see smoke or sparks, hear violent banging, or a fan appears to be striking something. Motors, refrigerant circuits, controls, and electrical components belong with a qualified technician.
The outdoor unit can transmit vibration too
Branches, leaves, ice, or an unstable base can create sounds that travel into the structure. With the equipment off, remove only clearly accessible exterior debris; never put hands or tools through a fan grille.
Record intermittent sounds
A short video can be useful if the noise disappears before a technician arrives. Capture when in the cycle it happens without approaching moving parts. Also note whether cooling performance changed, because noise plus reduced capacity is a different clue than noise alone.
Describe the sound, timing, and location. “Loud buzz when the compressor tries to start” is far more useful than simply “the AC is noisy.”
