Ink is not one universal stain. Ballpoint ink, permanent marker, and water-based ink can behave very differently, so start by identifying what made the mark and test any treatment on a hidden area first.
Do not smear ink sideways
Place white paper towels or a clean cloth beneath the stained area. Work with small dabs so color transfers into the absorbent layer, replacing it as it becomes stained.
Rubbing alcohol can help, but not on every fabric
For some ballpoint inks, the American Cleaning Institute recommends rubbing alcohol. Test it on an inside seam first because dyes and fibers can react.
Apply a small amount from the back of the stain toward the absorbent material and keep moving to a clean section. Do not soak a delicate garment without knowing how it will respond.
Rinse, pretreat, and wash
Once ink stops transferring, rinse thoroughly, apply a compatible detergent or stain remover, and launder according to the care label. Check before machine drying.
Permanent markers and specialty inks
Some inks may never come out completely. Escalating to stronger solvents can damage the garment more than the original mark. Professional cleaning may be wiser for valuable clothing.
Do not mix cleaning chemicals
Never combine rubbing alcohol, chlorine bleach, ammonia, or other cleaners. Use one treatment at a time, rinse well, and ventilate.
Identify the ink if you can
Oil-based ballpoint ink, water-based marker, and permanent marker do not dissolve the same way. Look at the pen or marker that caused the stain and use any product information as a clue. The less guessing you have to do, the lower the risk to the garment.
With very fresh liquid ink, blotting first matters. Flooding a large area before placing absorbent material underneath can turn one dot into a much larger stain.
Working from the back gives the ink somewhere to go
When the fabric allows it, place the stained face against clean white paper and apply treatment from the back. Ink can then move toward the absorbent layer instead of repeatedly traveling through the same fibers.
Replace the paper often. Working over an already saturated towel can transfer ink right back into the garment.
Rubbing alcohol does not mean any alcohol-containing product
Do not automatically substitute perfume, hand sanitizer, or alcoholic drinks. They contain other ingredients that can create new stains. If the method calls for isopropyl alcohol, use an appropriate product and provide ventilation.
Be cautious with acetate, silk, and special finishes
Some solvents can affect fibers, adhesives, and dyes. If the garment is not normally washable or has significant value, tell a professional cleaner what type of ink caused the stain.
A faint permanent mark may be better than fabric damage
Some inks never disappear completely. A small stable shadow can be preferable to continued treatment that creates a bleached ring, stiffness, or weakened fibers.
If treatment stops transferring ink but the visible mark no longer changes, reconsider whether further attempts are worth the risk.
The goal is to transfer ink out of the fabric without spreading it. Work slowly and stop if the garment’s own dye begins to change.
