How to Clean a Showerhead

If a showerhead has crooked spray or reduced flow, start by rubbing the nozzles and checking for mineral buildup. On compatible finishes, a vinegar soak can dissolve scale. For specialty finishes, filtered showerheads, or electronic models, check the manufacturer first. Rinse thoroughly and never mix cleaning chemicals.

A shower that used to produce an even spray can slowly turn into a collection of sideways jets. That does not automatically mean the house has low water pressure. Often the change is happening right at the fixture: mineral deposits are narrowing individual nozzle openings.

Start with the gentlest cleaning method and only move to soaking or disassembly if the buildup remains.

Read the spray pattern before you remove anything

If only a few nozzles are weak or spraying at odd angles, localized scale is a likely cause. If the entire shower suddenly loses flow and other faucets are weak too, the showerhead may not be the main problem.

Compare hot and cold flow as well. A large difference can point toward the shower valve or another part of the plumbing rather than the head itself.

Rub flexible nozzles first

Many modern showerheads use rubber or silicone spray tips designed to release scale when gently rubbed. Turn the water off and work across the nozzles with your fingers or a soft cloth.

A soft toothbrush can help around the faceplate and nozzle edges. Avoid needles, pins, or metal picks that can enlarge an outlet or damage the shape that creates the spray pattern.

Vinegar can dissolve scale, but the finish gets the final say

Vinegar’s mild acid helps dissolve calcium deposits. Kohler recommends vinegar soaking as one method for certain showerheads clogged by mineral buildup.

That does not make vinegar universal. Decorative finishes, stone components, specialty coatings, filtration media, and electronic features may have different restrictions. If the manufacturer warns against acids or soaking, use the approved method instead.

Removing the showerhead makes soaking easier to control

If the owner’s instructions allow removal, shut the water off and unscrew the head while supporting the shower arm so you do not twist the pipe inside the wall. Protect the finish with a cloth if a wrench is needed.

Soak only compatible parts for the time recommended by the manufacturer, then gently brush, rinse thoroughly, and reinstall. Do not assume an overnight soak is better; prolonged acid contact can harm some finishes.

A bag soak works, but do not hang unnecessary weight from the arm

For a fixed showerhead, a small bag of vinegar secured around the spray face can work on compatible models. Use only enough liquid to cover the nozzles. A large heavy bag can put needless stress on the shower arm and wall connection.

For oversized rain heads, lighted fixtures, speakers, or electronically controlled shower components, check the manual rather than improvising a hanging soak.

Check the inlet screen if your model has one

Some showerheads have a small screen or filter at the threaded connection. Debris there can reduce flow even when the nozzles look clean.

If the manufacturer describes it as removable, rinse it and reinstall it in the same orientation. Do not remove a flow regulator simply to make the shower “stronger.” Cleaning an obstruction and defeating a designed water-saving component are not the same thing.

Reinstall without overtightening

Start the showerhead by hand so the threads engage cleanly. Use thread-sealing tape only if the manufacturer calls for it, and tighten only enough to prevent leaks.

Run the shower after cleaning to flush out loosened mineral particles and any remaining vinegar. Check both the spray pattern and the threaded connection for leaks.

If flow is still low, widen the diagnosis

A clean showerhead with poor flow may have a clogged internal cartridge, an exhausted filter, a shower-valve issue, or genuinely low supply pressure. If other fixtures work normally, the problem is probably still local. If the whole house is affected, investigate the water supply rather than repeatedly cleaning the head.

The goal is to remove deposits, not to modify the showerhead. Start with the nozzles, use a compatible descaling method only when necessary, and leave filters, regulators, and engineered components in place.
