The white haze on shower glass is not simply dried dirt. Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium, and when droplets evaporate those minerals stay behind. Soap film can then trap even more residue.

Cleaning works better when you treat those layers in the right order: remove soap and body oils first, then address the mineral deposit with a product that is compatible with the glass and its finishes.

Start with a mild wash

Wet the glass with warm water and use mild detergent with microfiber or a nonabrasive sponge. This removes soap residue and oils that can block a descaling product from reaching the mineral layer.

Rinse and inspect. If white dots or a rough cloudy film remain, mineral deposits are likely the main problem.

Hard water leaves minerals, not a hygiene problem

USGS defines water hardness mainly by dissolved calcium and magnesium. As hard water dries, those minerals can leave spots and films on glass and other surfaces.

That is why scrubbing harder with ordinary soap may accomplish very little. You need to loosen the mineral without damaging glass, coatings or metal trim.

Check for a glass coating before reaching for vinegar

Many modern shower doors have hydrophobic or spot-resistant coatings. Manufacturers may restrict acids, solvents or abrasive products because they can damage those finishes.

Read the care guide for your door. Delta, for example, recommends mild detergent and water for its coated shower glass and lists chemicals that can damage the factory finish.

If mild acid is allowed, use it in a controlled way

On glass without special restrictions, diluted vinegar or a glass-safe mineral remover may help dissolve scale. Test a small area, use only the recommended contact time and do not let the cleaner dry on the surface.

Keep acidic products off natural stone, sensitive grout and metal finishes unless you know they are compatible. Rinse thoroughly afterward.

The cleaning tool should be gentler than the surface

Use microfiber, a nonabrasive sponge or a pad specifically approved for glass. Avoid steel wool, harsh scrub pads, blades and abrasive powders unless the manufacturer explicitly approves them.

Kohler warns that abrasive brushes and sharp tools can scratch glass panels and metal surfaces.

For old buildup, work in layers

Months of scale may not release in one pass. Repeat a moderate cycle of cleaner, contact time, gentle agitation and rinsing rather than dramatically increasing concentration or force.

If the glass remains cloudy even while fully wet, there may be permanent etching rather than removable surface scale.

Tell deposits from permanent damage

Wet a small area. If the haze largely disappears while wet and returns as it dries, surface residue is more likely. If it looks unchanged even when wet, the glass may be etched or microscopically damaged.

A glass-restoration professional can assess whether that damage can be polished or restored.

Prevention is easier than descaling

Kohler recommends using a shower squeegee and drying shower doors after use to reduce water spots and lime buildup in hard-water areas.

A 30-second routine prevents many droplets from drying in place. Leaving the enclosure open enough to ventilate also helps residual water disappear faster.

If scale appears all over the home, look at the water

Deposits on faucets, kettles, coffee makers and glassware suggest the home may have hard water. Hardness itself is not automatically a health problem, but it explains why scale returns quickly.

In that situation, measuring hardness can help you decide whether broader water-treatment options are worth considering.

The sequence that protects the glass

Remove soap first, identify any special coating, use only a compatible mineral cleaner, keep it wet for the stated contact time, scrub gently, rinse and dry.

With hard water, the best result comes from the right chemistry and a gentle tool, not from scrubbing harder.
