“The oven isn’t heating” can describe several different failures: nothing happens at all, preheat takes forever, only broil works, or the cavity gets warm but never reaches the set temperature. Defining which pattern you have is more useful than jumping straight to a bad heating element.
On an electric oven, causes range from a control setting or power-supply problem to a failed element, temperature sensor, or control board. Some checks are homeowner-friendly. Internal power wiring is not.
Start with controls you can check without opening anything
Make sure the oven is actually in Bake, Broil, or another heating mode rather than a timer-only setting. Some models have Control Lock, Delayed Start, or Demo/Showroom Mode, where the display works but heating is disabled.
If there was a recent outage, check the owner’s manual for reset instructions or error codes. Write down a recurring code instead of repeatedly clearing it; it may be the best diagnostic clue you have.
An electric oven can look powered and still be missing heating power
Many North American electric ranges use a 240-volt supply made from two hot legs. The clock and light can sometimes operate while the heating circuit does not have the full supply it needs.
Check the breaker only as the manual allows. If a breaker has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, stop using the oven and have the electrical fault investigated rather than repeatedly resetting protection.
Look at visible heating elements without touching them
Many electric ovens use a lower bake element and an upper broil element. A visible crack, blister, or burned-through section is a strong clue that an element has failed.
You do not need to touch or electrically test the element to notice visible damage. Replacement involves internal electrical connections and should follow the manufacturer’s procedure or be handled by a qualified technician.
Not heating and heating poorly are different problems
An oven that eventually gets hot but takes much too long, cooks unevenly, or consistently runs cool may still have an element working part of the time. Sensor position, calibration, door sealing, and control issues can also matter.
An oven thermometer can help you observe behavior, but avoid judging the appliance from one instant reading. Ovens cycle their elements on and off, so temperature naturally rises and falls around the set point.
Check the door seal
A damaged gasket or door that does not close fully lets heat escape and can extend preheat dramatically. Look for torn gasket material and food debris that prevents the door from seating.
Do not force hinges or latches. A heavy oven door can injure you or become further misaligned if adjusted without the service procedure.
The temperature sensor has a role too
Modern ovens commonly use a probe inside the cavity to tell the control how hot the oven is. A damaged or badly positioned sensor can cause premature cycling or incorrect temperature regulation.
Whirlpool includes sensor position among its troubleshooting checks. Electrical resistance testing of the sensor is a service-level task unless the manufacturer explicitly provides a user procedure.
If only one cooking mode fails, write that down
Broil working while Bake fails—or the reverse—is valuable information. On ovens with separate elements, that pattern narrows the circuit involved.
Stop testing if you smell electrical burning, see arcing, or the circuit breaker trips.
Do not bypass safeties or probe live circuits
Ovens combine high temperatures with substantial electrical power. A component that looks simple can be connected to hazardous voltage even when the rest of the appliance seems inactive.
Homeowner troubleshooting should stay with settings, accessible power checks, visual inspection, and observed behavior. Live electrical testing and control bypassing belong to qualified service.
When to schedule repair
Call for service if the breaker trips again, an element is visibly damaged, the oven has correct supply but will not heat, error codes persist, or performance stays abnormal after basic checks.

Preheat time is useful only when compared with the same oven
Large cavities, hidden elements, convection modes, and supply differences mean there is no single “correct” preheat time for every oven. Compare the appliance with its own normal behavior and the manual rather than an arbitrary internet number.
A sudden change—such as taking twice as long as it did last month—is more meaningful than discovering that a neighbor’s oven reaches temperature faster.
Before looking for “the failed part,” define exactly how the oven fails. No heat, one missing mode, and inaccurate heat are three different diagnostic paths.
