Place a dehumidifier in the area that actually has the moisture problem and give its intake and exhaust enough clearance to breathe. A damp basement, laundry area, or condensation-prone room usually benefits more than a distant hallway; also follow manufacturer clearances and keep the unit away from direct water exposure.
Start where humidity is highest
Use a hygrometer or clues such as condensation and odor to choose the room. If several areas are affected, addressing the source or improving circulation may work better than expecting one small unit to cover the whole home.
Keep intake and exhaust grilles clear
Do not crowd the unit against curtains, furniture, or a wall when the manual calls for clearance. Recirculated air needs a clear path for the sensor to read accurately.
Keep the unit on a stable, dry surface
Do not place it where it can be splashed, flooded, or where the cord crosses a walkway. In basements with water risk, prioritize safe location and power.
Continuous drainage can limit placement
If you connect a hose, it needs the route and slope specified unless the unit has a pump. A kinked hose can cause overflow even when the dehumidifier itself works.
