How to Use a Dehumidifier Properly

A dehumidifier works best when the room is reasonably closed, the filter is clean, and the humidity target is sensible. Use it to control airborne moisture, not as a substitute for repairing a leak, water intrusion, or wet wall that keeps adding moisture.

A dehumidifier works best when the room is reasonably closed, the filter is clean, and the humidity target is sensible. Use it to control airborne moisture, not as a substitute for repairing a leak, water intrusion, or wet wall that keeps adding moisture.

Measure humidity and set a reasonable target

A hygrometer or the unit’s sensor helps avoid unnecessary running. Keep humidity in a range that reduces condensation and mold without over-drying the space.

Close doors and windows while it runs

If humid outdoor air constantly enters, the unit works harder and achieves less. Ventilate at appropriate times, but do not leave a window open beside a running dehumidifier.

Empty the tank and clean the filter as directed

Standing water and a loaded filter reduce hygiene and performance. If using continuous drainage, confirm the hose slopes correctly and does not leak.

Fix the source if humidity rebounds quickly

A leak, damp foundation, or continuous condensation can overwhelm any appliance. If walls or floors are wet, investigate the source at the same time.
