There is no single refill interval for water-softener salt. It depends on water use, hardness, system capacity, and regeneration settings. Rather than refilling on a fixed calendar, inspect the brine tank regularly and keep the level within the manufacturer-recommended range. A high-use household with hard water will consume salt much faster than a low-demand one.
Inspect the brine tank regularly at first
For the first few months, check the level every few weeks to learn the household’s actual consumption. Do not fill to the top by habit if the manual specifies another maximum; leaving space can make salt bridges and level easier to observe.
Relate salt use to hardness and regeneration frequency
Greater hardness, more occupants, or water leaks can increase regeneration and salt use. If consumption changes suddenly without a usage change, review settings, leaks, and operation before assuming you simply need more salt.
Do not wait until the tank is completely empty
Keeping an adequate reserve prevents regeneration with insufficient salt. Add the specified product and address salt bridges only with a safe method that does not damage the tank or internal tubing.
Abnormal consumption can signal a setting or fault
A softener that regenerates too often, drains continuously, or fails to improve water despite using salt needs diagnosis. Compare inlet hardness, settings, and the manual; service may be needed if valves or controls are malfunctioning.
