A trash can cleans best when solid debris and grease are removed first, followed by washing with water and detergent and disinfection only when needed with a compatible product. The most important step for preventing odor is letting the bin dry completely before adding a fresh liner.
Empty the bin and remove stuck debris
Wear gloves when there are liquids or food residues and remove solids with paper or a tool not used for food preparation. Do not begin disinfecting while the surface is still covered with soil.
Wash with detergent before disinfecting
Soap and water remove grease and organic matter that can shield microorganisms. Scrub the lid, hinges, and corners, rinse, and then decide whether disinfection is warranted because of raw-food spills or other contamination.
If disinfecting, follow the label and never mix products
Follow the product’s dilution and contact-time instructions and ventilate. Never mix bleach with ammonia, acids, vinegar, or other cleaners; use one compatible method at a time.
Dry completely before adding a new liner
Moisture trapped beneath a liner encourages odor and sticky buildup. Leave the bin open until the lid, bottom, and seams are dry, and clean new spills before they accumulate.
