Removing refrigerator odor means eliminating the source rather than masking the interior with fragrance. Work in sections so food stays cold, discard spoiled food and spills, wash shelves and drawers with a compatible cleaner, and dry everything before reloading.
Keep food safely cold while you clean
Work efficiently and move perishables to an ice-filled cooler if cleaning will take time. Keep the refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below and do not leave perishable food at room temperature for extended periods.
Remove the odor source before washing surfaces
Look for spilled food, open containers, meat trays, and liquid beneath drawers. Persistent odor often hides in a gasket, drain channel, or spill that is not visible from the front.
Wash removable parts with a compatible cleaner
Let very cold glass shelves warm before using hot water to reduce thermal-shock risk. Use soapy water or the recommended product and never mix bleach with ammonia, vinegar, or other cleaners.
Dry and reload to prevent odors from returning
Dry gaskets, corners, and drawers before returning food. Store raw meat in containers that contain drips, cover strong-smelling foods, and periodically check for forgotten items at the back.
