Condensation forms when humid air meets a surface cold enough for water vapor to become liquid. On walls it often appears at cold corners, thermal bridges, behind furniture, or in poorly ventilated areas. Repeated condensation calls for reducing humidity and checking insulation, leaks, and air movement.
Confirm condensation rather than a leak
Condensation often follows cold weather, showering, cooking, or high humidity and affects cool surfaces. A localized stain that grows after rain, beneath plumbing, or at one specific point may be a leak and needs different troubleshooting.
Measure and reduce indoor humidity
A hygrometer can show whether indoor humidity stays high. Use kitchen and bath exhaust, ventilate when outdoor conditions allow, and consider dehumidification if humidity persists; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends keeping relative humidity below 60%, ideally 30–50%.
Improve airflow around cold walls
Furniture pushed tightly against an exterior wall can trap a cold, damp air pocket. Leaving some clearance and allowing circulation may reduce condensation, although it does not replace fixing poor insulation.
Dry wet surfaces promptly and address the cause
Dry visible moisture and do not paint over a wall that remains damp. If mold, soft material, swollen drywall, or condensation persists despite humidity control, investigate insulation and possible water entry.
