Seasonal clothes store best when they go away clean and completely dry, are protected from moisture, pests, and strong light, and remain accessible without being crushed for months. The goal is not to seal everything at any cost but to create a clean, dry, stable storage environment.
Clean every garment before storage
Sweat, food, fragrance, and soil can yellow fabric, create odors, and attract insects. Follow the care label and let every item dry completely before folding or hanging it.
Choose containers for the fabric and location
Clean lidded bins protect from dust in dry closets, while garments that benefit from airflow can use breathable covers. Avoid damp cardboard, dirty bags, and containers with chemical odors that may transfer to fabric.
Do not crush delicate garments for months
Structured coats, insulated garments, and fine knits can distort under heavy compression. Fold fabrics that stretch on hangers and use supportive hangers for pieces that genuinely need to hang.
Store in a cool, dry place you can inspect
A damp basement, temperature-swinging garage, or very hot attic can be worse than an interior closet. Check stored clothes mid-season if the space has a history of moisture or insects.
