Skunk odor can enter from outdoors through doors, windows, and air intakes or remain on a surface sprayed near the home. First make sure the animal has left and avoid approaching it; then ventilate and clean only affected materials with compatible methods without mixing household chemicals.
Do not approach or block the skunk's exit
Keep people and pets indoors and leave the animal a route away. Do not try to trap it under decks or structures; if it is injured, trapped, or repeatedly entering a space, contact wildlife control.
Ventilate from the cleaner side of the house
Temporarily close windows or intakes nearest the sprayed area and open others when outdoor air is better. Replace filters that captured heavy odor when appropriate, but do not spray fragrance into ductwork.
Wash affected exterior surfaces according to material
Siding, concrete, wood, and fabrics tolerate different products. Start with mild detergent and use a specific deodorizer only when compatible; test first and protect plants and storm drains.
Do not mix homemade formulas with bleach or other cleaners
Some popular recipes react chemically or can damage surfaces when combined. Use one formula at a time, follow instructions, and never store reactive mixtures in sealed containers where pressure can build.
