Cleaning a vacuum filter is appropriate only when that filter is designed to be washed or tapped clean. Some high-efficiency media and pleated filters are disposable; wetting them can deform the filter, reduce filtration, and send moisture toward the motor.
Identify the filter type and part number
Check symbols, the manual, or part number before wetting anything. A foam prefilter may be washable while the main filter in the same vacuum is not, so the same routine should not be applied to both.
Remove loose dust without damaging the media
Work outdoors or over a bag and use gentle tapping or a brush only when the manufacturer recommends it. Crushing pleats or using high-pressure air can open channels that allow particles through.
Wash only filters marked washable
Rinse with water at the specified temperature and avoid detergent unless approved. Do not wring foam or scrub delicate media; the goal is to remove dust without changing the filter's shape or structure.
Let the filter dry completely before reinstalling
A filter that feels dry outside can still hold moisture internally. Follow the recommended drying time and do not speed it with a hair dryer or radiator; reinstalling a damp filter can cause odor, mold, or motor damage.
