A garbage disposal jams when hard objects, fibrous food, packed debris, or overload prevents the mechanism from turning. The symptom matters: humming while the motor tries to start points toward a mechanical jam, while complete silence may be power or thermal protection rather than a jam.
Humming without rotation points to a mechanical jam
Switch it off immediately to avoid overheating the motor and disconnect real power before inspecting. Never put a hand inside; visible objects should be removed with long tongs and the mechanism should be freed only through manufacturer-designed access.
Fibers, starches, and too much waste can pack together
Fibrous peels, large amounts of rice or pasta, and too much food at once can form a mass that restricts rotation or drainage. Feed only permitted waste gradually and use the water flow specified by the manual.
Hard objects can jam or damage the mechanism
Cutlery, glass, large bones, or nonfood objects can become trapped. If they cannot be removed from above with a tool while hands stay clear, do not force the motor or strike the disposal housing.
Silence after overload may be thermal protection
Some models have a reset button that should be used only after the unit cools and the cause is removed. If it trips again, smells burned, or the mechanism remains locked, stop using it and arrange service.
