Mineral scale builds up in water pathways and heating components, reducing flow and affecting temperature. Descaling a coffee maker should use the product and cycle approved by the manufacturer; vinegar is not universally compatible and should never be mixed with other cleaners.
Check which descaler the model allows
The manual may call for a specific commercial solution, citric acid, or in some models diluted vinegar. An unapproved acid can attack seals, metals, or sensors; do not improvise concentration.
Remove coffee and filters before the cycle
Empty beans or grounds as applicable and remove disposable filters or accessories identified by the manual. Fill the reservoir with the exact mixture and place a large enough carafe under the outlet.
Complete the cycle with the specified contact time
Some machines pause to let the acid work while others have an automatic program. Do not extend the contact time in the hope of better cleaning; follow the cycle so solution does not remain unnecessarily in internal parts.
Rinse until all descaling solution is removed
Empty and rinse the reservoir and run the number of clean-water cycles specified by the manufacturer. Do not brew coffee until no solution odor or residue remains and all accessories are back in place.
