Loading a dishwasher well means allowing water and detergent to reach surfaces without blocking spray arms or trapping water in containers. Dishes do not need to be prewashed until clean, but large scraps should be removed and every item should be positioned securely.
Scrape off large scraps without fully prewashing

Face dirty surfaces toward the spray
Plates and trays need spacing so water can pass between them. Bowls and containers should angle downward; do not place large items in front of the detergent dispenser or in the path of the spray arms.
Secure lightweight items and utensils
Small plastics can flip over, fill with water, or fall onto a hot component. Put them where the manufacturer specifies; separate spoons so they do not nest and load knives in a way that reduces hand injury risk.
Spin the spray arms before starting
With the dishwasher off, manually rotate accessible spray arms to confirm that no tray, handle, or utensil touches them. This quick check prevents poorly washed zones and repeated impacts inside the tub.
